Shop for the Cure - Buying to support Breast Cancer Awarness

A great commentary by Sarah Hutchins at Vanguard, on the commercializing of pink ribbon products. Plus a fabulous cartoon to help you visualize the scheme.

buypink-blog.jpg

The bottom line, make sure you know what and why you’re buying. Are you shopping to show your support or find a gift that commemorates an event… or are you buying while you pay to support the cause?

Many of the products I have found to feature here do not actually raise funds for the cause… that’s why I’ve added them to my collection. Although the merchant may not donate, I do… because it’s important to me.

Breast Cancer Risk Calculator Launched

The National Breast Cancer Centre (NBCC) in Australia has launched an online Breast Cancer risk calculator.  The tool was unveiled at a Pink Ribbon breakfast in Sydney on October 22 (Pink Ribbon Day).

risk-calculator.jpg

More about the NBCC

I completed the calculator and found it to be very informative. Not only are the questions clear and to the point, each question includes a “learn more about this risk factor” link, so you can find out why the question is being asked.

At the end of the evaluation, there is “your risk” level and additional informationto further learn about your specific risk level.

They also recommend a few things to consider:

Having a baby before the age of 30 and breastfeeding for a total of 12 months or more can reduce a woman’s risk for breast cancer.

Exercise - regular moderate to brisk physical activity of between 1.5 to 4 hours a week has been shown to reduce risk for breast cancer. The longer the duration of exercise, the greater the reduction in risk.

Alcohol - Drinking alcohol increases your risk for breast cancer. The more you drink, the greater the increase in risk. Keeping your alcohol consumption down to no more than 2 standard drinks a day is recommended.”

Much of this I’ve heard here and there, but not all. I learned a few new things today.

I think this is a great learning tool for women of all ages.

Pink Ribbons and Universal Love

Marguerite Orane was a guest speaker at the birthday of the Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) last week. her talk focused on pink and its representation as universal love…

“Pink is the colour of universal love and there is no greater power,” she explained. She noted that the dictionary defines pink as; “of the highest order or degree.” To her, pink means; potential, invincibility, nurturing and knowing.

October has passed but Breast Cancer Support continues

There’s always a mad rush of retailers to promote pink ribbons for the month of October. Every year I see more and more of my favorite products sporting a pink ribbon… but only for 30 days. Now that the month is over and we’re heading into the holiday shopping season, where are the retailers’ focus? Holiday shopping of course. Pink ribbons are replaced with red bows and green stockings.

However, the support continues, as it should.

Some of the recent headlines…

Thousands turn out for Race for the Cure
Austin, Texas - Nov. 4th
The battle against breast cancer surged forward as Austin hosted its 10th annual Race for the Cure.

Thousands walk for breast cancer awareness
Arizona - Nov 2nd-4th
More than 2,000 women and men accessorized in pink walked 60 miles over the weekend to fight breast cancer and raise money for research in the Arizona Breast Cancer 3-Day.

Big turnout for Pink Ribbon run
Cameron County, PA
More than 100 runners and walkers were at the starting line for Sunday’s Marian J. Wettrick Pink Ribbon 5K Walk/Run in Coudersport. The event raised money and awareness in the battle against breast cancer. Coudersport social studies teacher John Sherry was the overall champion with a time of 19:11. Topping the women’s division was Dawn Bieser (21:55).

Good to see the support outlives the promotions - the disease continues on, so should we!

Think before you buy Pink Ribbons

The point of this story is one of the reasons ShopBCA was created. So many companies offer great pink dedicated designs yet give as much as we’d think… it drives me crazy trying to figure out which donate and to where. So, shopbca donates to the cause when products are purchased by selling the featured products as an affiliate marketer.

“A lot of those pink products aren’t as benevolent as they seem to be. Some companies donate just a tiny portion of proceeds or set a limit on the amount they’ll donate, making the pink ribbon far more profitable for the company than it is for breast cancer.”
