Breast Cancer Risk Calculator Launched

The National Breast Cancer Centre (NBCC) in Australia has launched an online Breast Cancer risk calculator.  The tool was unveiled at a Pink Ribbon breakfast in Sydney on October 22 (Pink Ribbon Day).

risk-calculator.jpg

More about the NBCC

I completed the calculator and found it to be very informative. Not only are the questions clear and to the point, each question includes a “learn more about this risk factor” link, so you can find out why the question is being asked.

At the end of the evaluation, there is “your risk” level and additional informationto further learn about your specific risk level.

They also recommend a few things to consider:

Having a baby before the age of 30 and breastfeeding for a total of 12 months or more can reduce a woman’s risk for breast cancer.

Exercise - regular moderate to brisk physical activity of between 1.5 to 4 hours a week has been shown to reduce risk for breast cancer. The longer the duration of exercise, the greater the reduction in risk.

Alcohol - Drinking alcohol increases your risk for breast cancer. The more you drink, the greater the increase in risk. Keeping your alcohol consumption down to no more than 2 standard drinks a day is recommended.”

Much of this I’ve heard here and there, but not all. I learned a few new things today.

I think this is a great learning tool for women of all ages.

Marguerite Orane was a guest speaker at the birthday of the Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) last week. her talk focused on pink and its representation as universal love…

“Pink is the colour of universal love and there is no greater power,” she explained. She noted that the dictionary defines pink as; “of the highest order or degree.” To her, pink means; potential, invincibility, nurturing and knowing.

Think before you buy Pink Ribbons

The point of this story is one of the reasons ShopBCA was created. So many companies offer great pink dedicated designs yet give as much as we’d think… it drives me crazy trying to figure out which donate and to where. So, shopbca donates to the cause when products are purchased by selling the featured products as an affiliate marketer.

“A lot of those pink products aren’t as benevolent as they seem to be. Some companies donate just a tiny portion of proceeds or set a limit on the amount they’ll donate, making the pink ribbon far more profitable for the company than it is for breast cancer.”

Pink Ribbon Pizza

America’s Greenest Restaurant Goes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pizza Fusion will donate portions of their profits throughout the month of October to Susan G. Komen For The Cure to support the fight against breast cancer.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (PRWEB) September 12, 2007 — Pizza Fusion (www.pizzafusion.com), the leader in the organic restaurant sector and environmental restaurant practices, recently announced that for the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they’ll be donating 15% of the revenue from three of their popular specialty pizzas, including Sausage and Tri-Color Peppers, Artichoke and Red Peppers, and Organic Veggie Medley, to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Affiliate (www.komenmiaftl.org). Donations will include sales from both medium and large sized pizzas.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with Pizza Fusion’s commitment to support the fight for a cure for breast cancer,” Bobbi Meyers, executive director of the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Susan G. Komen For The Cure affiliate, states. “Through awareness and funding from such socially responsible organizations as Pizza Fusion, support, research and medical advancements necessary for putting an end to breast cancer are made possible. We’re thrilled to align ourselves with Pizza Fusion in fighting this terrible disease.”

blog.jpg

According to a study published in The Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry (http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/sample.cgi/jafcau/2003/51/i05/html/jf020635c.html), organic fruit and vegetables that are not treated with pest-fighting chemicals may contain up to 60 percent more cancer-fighting phytochemicals. After studying the effect on three different types of produce, the researchers found that food grown without pesticides and herbicides contained between 19 and 60 percent more flavonoids, a particular kind of phytochemical with certain cancer-fighting properties. These foods were compared to food produced in the conventional way.

“Cancer is a major health epidemic today. We’re very pleased to extend our philanthropic reach to supporting the advancement for a cure,” Vaughan Lazar, CEO and co-founder of Pizza Fusion, explains. “Furthermore, Susan G. Komen For The Cure is a tremendous organization with a wonderful cause that we’re very proud to partner with in contributing to the fight against breast cancer.”

Breast Cancer coverage loophole

According to an article published September 13th, 2007 in the Wall Street Journal, women all over the country are finding themselves stranded without insurance and without assistance they’re eligible for. Their treatment could be covered, yet each individual state can avoid the costs and cause women diagnosed with breast cancer more hardships. This article is shocking to me.

“…Thousands of women get caught in a loophole in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act each year. Under the little-known law passed by Congress in 2000, uninsured women under age 65 who are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer can have their treatment covered by Medicaid, the government-funded health program for the poor, even if they don’t meet all of its eligibility criteria.

But the law gives states an escape hatch. Rather than provide coverage to all comers, states can choose to cover only those diagnosed at clinics that get funding from a federal cancer-detection program. Texas chose the more restrictive option.”

Read more, find out what your state laws follow and pass on this information!
